Playing Winnie the Pooh's Favourite Game - Pooh Sticks

08:30

We love Winnie the Pooh.  I read the books as a child and read them to my children now. It's wonderful to see that they enjoy the same sweet and simple stories that children have for generations.  In The House at Pooh Corner the characters play a little game called Pooh Sticks, and it's one that Ethan and Ivy love to play as well.

What you'll need:
  • a flowing river
  • a bridge
  • a stick for each player
As long as you have a river with a bridge over it, you are ready to play!  We are lucky enough to have one nearby, so we get to play Pooh Sticks whenever we like.  We walk through the trees and choose one stick each.  Ethan likes to collect sticks on our walks anyway, so this usually just gives those sticks a purpose.

Once we each have a stick we head over to the bridge and stand on the side that the water is flowing from.  Then we count to three, and we all drop in our sticks at the same time!

Then we run over to the other side of the bridge to see whose stick will pass through first, and they are the winner!

I have talked to Ethan a little bit about techniques, whether his stick has won because it is the biggest or the smallest, and I think that he does sometimes take that on board when choosing his next stick.  But mostly it is just a lot of fun, and we love to play it together!

  1. Oh my goodness! I had completely forgotten about playing pooh sticks. I used to love it as a child and have actually visited Winnie the Pooh "world" and played Pooh Sticks on the actual bridge.
