Singing Songs

20:31

Lately Ethan has been singing even more than usual, he can sing parts of a few different songs. So I decided to start adding some new songs to our repertoire   It's incredible as he must be going through a phase where his memory is building, as he is able to pick things up really quickly.  We've already been singing a lot of Row Row Row Your Boat, The Wheels on the Bus, Baa Baa Black Sheep and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.  This week I decided to start singing the ABC song with him, and he's picked up almost all of it!  It's incredibly impressive, but I know that it's all about the rhythm (especially as it's the same melody as Baa Baa and Twinkle Twinkle) and his fantastic memory phase.  It makes me wonder if he'll be a musical learner long term, and if we'll be making up songs for him to memorise his times tables when he's older.  For now it's great for his Creative Development as he's learning to sing to a melody, but I'm not complaining if he manages to learn some letter names at the same time.  Next week I'm going to try a days of the week song :)

* A minor note, as a teacher I do find it quite frustrating when some children know their letter names too well, as it can cause them to struggle with learning phonics.  I don't plan on drilling Ethan with the letter names to avoid this confusion, though I personally believe that the two can be learned alongside each other in a fun way.  If as a parent you're unsure, there is no hurry and you can happily leave them to play and learn in other ways and they can learn letters and phonics when they start school. *
