Father's Day Barbecue Craft

08:30

It's almost Father's Day and each year I see a lot of gifts and crafts that suit a certain type of Dad, but I'm always searching for alternatives.  Last year we made a remote holder craft with a travel theme that was perfectly suited to a world travelling Dad and this year we're crafting for those barbecue loving Dads!  My husband is South African and loves a braai, so this gift is perfect for him.

What you'll need:

  • lolly sticks / craft sticks
  • glue
  • cornflour / corn starch
  • shiny silver card
  • markers / felt tip pens

It's so easy to make and the kids really enjoyed just playing about and creating something special for their Daddy.  We started by making the sticks into a grill pattern by putting two sticks along the sides, covering them with glue and laying the other sticks between them.

Next we made some clay using cornflour and white glue like we made for these clay bowls. The recipe is so easy that I made a small quantity of clay within minutes, just by using one part glue and 2 parts cornflour.

I kneaded it to make it smooth and gave it to the kids to create teeny tiny sausages, burgers, steaks, corn on the cob and boerewors (especially for a South African Daddy).  It's great for their little hand muscles and for fine motor control to roll out the clay and make their tiny creations.

Then we got some shiny card and Ethan drew a spatula shape on the back of it which he then cut out to go on our barbecue craft.

We left the clay to dry and then attempted to colour them to look like sausages and everything else using markers and even put grill marks on them to look like they've been on the barbecue.

Then we glued them all onto our grill along with our spatula and we've stuck it onto the front of our Father's Day card.  I also think it would look great as the top of a keepsake box made out of craft sticks stacked on top of each other.

If you want to save this idea, you can pin it for later:
