Incy Wincy Spider Craft

It's springtime and we're spending lots of time outside in the garden and seeing lots of little minibeasts (bugs) that we want to know more about!  And unfortunately I've discovered that Ivy has developed quite a bit of fear of spiders, so I'm trying to encourage her to love all little bugs, including spiders, and we've been singing the Incy Wincy Spider every time we see one.  So what better activity then to make our own little spider to play with.

What you'll need:
  • cardboard tube (mind is from kitchen towel)
  • egg carton
  • paint
  • paint brushes
  • googly eyes
  • glu dots
  • black or coloured card
  • blu tack
  • magnets

We started by painting the cardboard tube blue to look like the water spout that the spider climbs up.  Ivy loves to paint so she was very happy to do this job, and sang the song as she painted.

Then I cut up an egg box and the kids each painted one section with black paint to make the spider's body.  I encouraged them to cover the whole thing in paint, but wasn't too worried if they left some spaces.

When the paint was dry Ethan helped by using the glu dots to stick some googly eyes on our spider.  He also chose some sparkly purple card for the spiders legs (we couldn't find any black, so that was the next best thing!) and we cut some thin pieces as Ethan counted out eight legs for me. He then used some more glu dots to stick those to the spider's body.

We then stuck on a piece of magnetic strip, but found that it wasn't a strong enough magnet, so we used some blu tack to stick on one of Ethan's MagnaTiles instead.

We were then able to use a magnet wand inside the tube to move our spider up and down the water spout to go along with the song!
