With the Olympics coming up we are thinking all things sports and fun this summer! We love to play all sorts of games and have races around the garden, so of course the perfect thing to add to our fun is our very own winners medals.
What you'll need:
- cardboard box
- scissors
- Bostik White Glu or Bostik Clear Glu
- Gold, silver (and bronze) paint
- paint brushes
- gold and silver ribbon
- hold punch
The first thing that I did was to cut circle shapes out of a cardboard box, this is something that I did for the children as it's quite thick, but I am sure that older children could manage this step on their own. I also used a hole punch to make holes in the cardboard, another step that older children could do themselves.
Our plan was to try the glue resist technique on our medals, so the first step was for the kids to draw all over the medals using glue. We used both white glue and clear glue for this and didn't find that there was much of difference in the end effect as both worked well. The kids enjoyed squeezing the glue all around, which is also great for building up the muscles in their hands. I did a few as well, putting the numbers 1, 2 and 3 on a set of medals (I'm sure that you'll see these in future play activities too!)
We left the glue to dry overnight just to be sure that it was completely hardened. Then the next day we painted our medals. The kids loved seeing how the gold and silver paint went smoothly onto their medals but that it went over the glue so that their designs could still be seen.
We didn't have any bronze paint so did a little experimenting with colour mixing and put a little bit of black paint on our palette and mixed some gold paint in to make a darker colour which we're calling bronze.
Once the paint had dried we were able to thread some gold and silver ribbon through the holes in our medals and have our own races in the garden to win those medals!
Ethan and Ivy both loved playing and winning their races and especially being able to wear the medals that they made themselves. I'm sure that when the Olympics is on tv next month they're going to love these medals even more, and who knows maybe they'll win real ones in the 2032 Olympics!
