Children learn best through play.  Leaving a child to explore his surroundings, to discover how things work and to put things together in a variety of ways is the best gift that you can give a child.  To give them the opportunity to play in a safe environment with a variety of toys (not necessarily traditional toys, regular items as well) is the best way to stimulate their senses and get their little brains working.  Psychologists, teachers, philosophers, writers and other great thinkers have been saying some great things about play over the years:

"There is little that gives children greater pleasure than when a grown-up lets himself down to their level, renounces his oppressive superiority and plays with them as an equal." - Sigmund Freud 

"A child's greatest achievements are possible in play, achievements that tomorrow will become her basic level of real action and mortality"  - Lev Vygotsky
