Canada Day Coffee Filter Suncatchers

20:18

We are starting our Canada Day celebrations a little bit early this year, so that we can do a few things before the big day on July 1st.  As a Canadian / British / South African family we have lots of different occasions to celebrate, but Canada Day is one of my favourites.  Last year we made Canada Day Handprint Flags, which I think we'll do again this year as it will be cute to have one for every year.

Today I decided to try making coffee filter suncatchers with Ethan.  I have seen quite a few different varieties on Pinterest, so we made up our own version today.  It was a lovely activity for Ethan's Creative Development as he coloured in the maple leaves and put the water on to make the colour spread.

First I traced a maple leaf shape onto a coffee filter and cut out the 2 maple leaves.  Then gave Ethan a red marker (we like the Crayola Beginnings markers, they are super washable) to decorate the leaves.

Then we used a spray bottle to spray water onto the leaves and watched as the colour spread to cover the whole leaves.  It made a lovely effect.  Then we left them to dry.

It was actually a lot easier to do than I thought it would be and Ethan really enjoyed it.  He was able to draw dots and scribbles all over the leaves and decorate them freely which he enjoyed.  Then when the spray bottle came out he was very excited.  I had to help with the spraying as I didn't want him to drench them, but he was memorised by the colour spreading so he didn't mind.  Now I wish that we had made more of them, when they dry they really do look lovely.  Time to decorate the house for Canada Day!
