What the Ladybird Heard Story Sack

07:30

We love to really bring a story to life, and what better way than with a story sack!  This week we've been reading and playing with our story sack from What the Ladybird Heard by Julia Donaldson.

It was kind a fun one to put together as we just had to go to our toy animal collection to find most of the characters from the story.  We have a cow, pig, dog, 2 cats, hen, horse, duck, goose and a sheep.  Then we needed a few people like the farmer, 2 baddies and a policeman.  We used a ladybird shaker that we made a few weeks ago and made the pond out of a piece of blue felt. The most fun part was making the map from the story (but I'll tell you about that later).

Then it came time to play through the story!  I read through the pages as Ethan picked up the different characters to do their part of the story, making each of the animals sounds and having the ladybird go to each animal and whispering the plan.

Then it came time for the baddies to use their map to try to capture the prized cow!  Ethan drew the map beforehand whilst I read that part of the story to him and he followed along with the map in the book.  It may not look like much, but he was so engaged and really did accurately follow along with the instructions to the route.  It was so much fun to watch and he was so proud of himself and his finished map.

Of course the baddies plan is foiled and they end up in the duck pond, which is Ethan's very favourite part of the story and he always giggles at the thought, so having his little bad guys end up in  our little pond was hilarious!  Ethan continued to play with his story sack on his own, and even collected up some other props to add to the bag, like a police car and a car for the baddies.  I love a story sack because it's so easy to tidy up when we're finished playing, then take out again the next day to do it all again!
