Homework Station

14:29

We've been setting up a new homework station at home to make our after school routine a bit easier.  I've actually been making lots of little organisational changes to the house, as the children are both in school and getting older now we had a lot of toys that they didn't play with anymore, and I'm realising that their needs are changing.

We used to have this cute little table and chairs for them to sit at and do their colouring, but as they've become bigger (and sadly outgrown those adorable chairs!) it just became a dumping ground and was always covered in random bits of paper and all sorts of pencils and colouring things.  I was in the process or organising using little baskets, but it just wasn't really making much difference.

So when Kiddies Kingdom offered to send us this lovely Kidsaw Country Cottage Bookcase I knew that it would be just perfect for our new homework station.  It came flat packed, but was very easy to put together and is quite sturdy, so it holds loads of stuff and fits perfectly into the spot where the small table was.

I used plenty of little baskets of various shapes and sizes to hold our crayons, coloured pencils, pencil cases and notebooks.

I also have a very cute little teddy bear pencil pot (ours is from the Great Little Trading Company, but a few years old so I can't seem to find a link to it anymore), an adorable cloud tape dispenser (ours is actually from the pound shop, such a cute little find), these little storage drawers holding erasers, scissors and sharpeners and a magazine file to hold the homework (which is separated in plastic folders).

All of the baskets are labeled using chalkboard labels which I write on with these chalk pens.  It's all very clearly labelled, but not too organised to make the children feel that they can't touch anything!  It's just easy to take things out and put them back when they are finished.

So when it is time to do homework, we can easily come over to the shelf and just take the pencil pot and the homework pouch that we need over to the table and work from there.  After school I will often set the table up with everything that they will both need, and then it gets put away when they're finished.  This way we also know where all the homework is, so we're not scrambling around in the morning looking for things on a messy table!

So far the new system is working really well for us, but of course we're always open to more tips.  How do you organise all of your homework things?  We also found some other lovely storage units in the Kiddies Kingdom Silver Cross range as well, which could work if you have a different sized space to fit a shelf into.

Pin this idea for later:
