Community Helpers Sight Words Game

12:00

Ethan has recently started school and has been bringing home sets of sight words for us to read and practise at home.  We are trying to find as many different fun ways to work on them as we can, and it's great to connect to other topics that Ethan is learning about at school.

We decided to make up our own simple game using Ethan's sight words and some community helper Wow Toys that we have.  So we found as many little firefighters, police officers and doctors that we could and set up all of our words.

We played the game in several different ways, sometimes I would just ask Ethan to place one of the community helpers on a word and then read it to me.  He would then sound out the word before placing the person down.

The other option was for me to ask Ethan to place a specific community helper on a specific word.  He would then pick up the person and scan all of the words until he found the one that he was looking for.  This is great for building their sight reading skills without sounding out each word, and for picking up on the clues of the size of the word and the initial sound to find the word more quickly.

Once we had used up all of our community helpers on the words we then picked up our left over words and read them in a different way.  We used our fire truck toy to hold a word at the top of the ladder, then Ethan had to climb a firefighter up the ladder to read the word.

As an extra extension activity I asked Ethan to make up sentences for some of the words and then have his little community helpers act them out.  He loved that part and then happily played with his community helper toys after I put the words away.
