Autumn ABC Discovery Box

07:30

It's almost autumn and as much as I am sad to see summer go, it is nice to be able to collect pretty autumn leaves as we go on our walks.  We collected some leaves and other treasures today to bring home for our autumn abc discovery tray.

I used our big builders tray instead of a smaller box because Ivy really likes to climb in with her treasures and use both her hands and feet to explore! Then we put all of our lovely autumn treasures in the tray along with our alphabet sand moulds to play with.

Ivy had a lot of fun exploring and playing with the different materials and grouping the letters together in different ways.  At 18 months I'm only looking to introduce her to the different letter sounds, I'm certainly not pushing her to say or identify them herself.

Ivy is very good at collecting things though, so we started sorting out some of our autumn finds and grouping them with the letter that they begin with.  So Ivy found me the flowers to go with the F, acorns for A and lots of leaves for L

It's a great way to introduce Ivy to the letters by modelling the sounds that they make for her, but mostly just letting her have fun and explore the autumn leaves.  Of course Ethan (3 1/2) was excited to dive in as well, and he was able to identify many of the letters and even match up some of the items with a bit of assistance.  We'll definitely be doing this again when we can find some more autumn treasures to add to our tray, Ethan can't wait to start collecting conkers!

We're taking part in an Fun Ways to Play with ABCs series over on Something to Offer, and today there are a few posts about Fun Seasonal Ways to Play with ABCs.  Take a look at these ABC Cookies for All Seasons from Creative World of Varya today as well.
